Archery GB has updated the handicap and classification schemes with effect from 2023. Golden Records has been updated with the changes.

Handicap Scheme Changes

The handicap scheme is changing in a number of ways such that old scores and handicaps are incompatible with new ones.

Since archers can have 2 handicaps (indoor and outdoor) in different time frames this changeover will occur in two stages:

Outdoor Handicaps

On 1st January 2023 all archers will have their outdoor handicaps archived. All archers will be treated as new to the scheme.  There will be no starting handicaps for Outdoor 2023. Archers will receive a handicap after shooting three rounds.

Handicaps will be calculated as previously from then on except that averages will now be rounded down, not up.

Indoor Handicaps

Indoor handicaps will continue to be calculated using the old handicap scheme and tables for the remainder of the 2022-2023 indoor season. Tables for indoor rounds using the new handicap scheme will be released prior to the end of the 2022/2023 indoor season (30th June 2023).

On 1st July 2023 all archers will have their indoor handicaps archived. All archers will be treated as new to the scheme. There will be no starting handicaps for Indoor 2023/24.  Archers will receive a handicap after shooting three rounds.

Handicaps will be calculated as previously from then on except that averages will now be rounded down, not up.

Key Changes to the Handicap Scheme

Handicap values will now range from 0 to 150

Averages will now be rounded down.

Classification Scheme Changes

The outdoor target classification scheme is changing in a number of ways such that old scores and classifications are incompatible with new ones.

Since archers can have 2 classifications (indoor and outdoor) in different time frames this changeover will occur in two stages:

Outdoor Classifications

On 1st January 2023 all archers will have their outdoor classifications archived. All archers will be treated as new to the scheme.  There will be no starting classifications for Outdoor 2023 with the exception of Master Bowman and Grand Master Bowman for the purposes of qualification for the 2023 UK Masters.

Archers will receive a classification in accordance with the new scheme when sufficient rounds have been shot.

Indoor Classifications

Indoor classifications will continue to be calculated using the old classifications scheme and tables for the remainder of the 2022-2023 indoor season. Tables for indoor rounds using the new classifications scheme will be released prior to the end of the 2022/2023 indoor season (30th June 2023).

On 1st July 2023 all archers will have their indoor classifications archived. All archers will be treated as new to the scheme. There will be no starting classifications for Indoor 2023/24.  Archers will receive a classification in accordance with the new scheme when sufficient rounds have been shot.

Key Changes to the Classification Scheme

Classifications will be calculated in accordance with the new scheme based on number of arrows in the rounds shot and the score status.  It is no longer necessary to shoot 3 rounds.

For example an award in the Archer tier can be achieved with rounds totalling 12 dozen. This could be a single York round or a number of shorter rounds.

Practice scores will only count towards the Archer tier of the new scheme. To progress to the higher tiers, scores will have to be shot competitively in club or open competitions. The Master tier will require scores shot at Record Status events or similar.
