Security Upgrade

As previously advised, we have disabled the TLS1.0 security protocol on our server.  Users of older product versions will lose the ability to connect to the update service and will not receive update notifications.  Cloud users will be unable to connect to cloud services, they may see a message advising of lack of internet connection. Connections can be restored by installing the latest versions.  However, please note that these are not compatible with Windows XP and early versions of Windows Vista.

Important Security Update

The Payment Card Industry Security Standards require disabling the TLS1.0 security protocol by 30 June 2018.  Users MUST upgrade Golden Records and Golden Arrow to the latest version to maintain full functionality. We will be disabling TLS1.0 on our web server on 30 June 2018.  Users of older versions may experience errors and may be unable to access update notification services.  Cloud users may be unable to connect and sync. Please note that with the latest versions we are moving the software to the Microsoft .Net 4.5 platform which is supported on most recent Windows versions.  Unfortunately.Net4.5 is not compatible with Windows XP and early versions of Windows Vista.

Website Outage

An update on the website outage today. It appears that last evening a trencher cut through a fibre optic cable serving a data center where our server is hosted. It was not until this morning that the cut was located, and work to splice in a temporary cable, then make a permanent repair, took all day. Normal service has been restored, and we apologise for any inconvenience.

Golden Records Update

A new version of Golden Records is available.  This fixes a few bugs, and enforces handicap calculations only on the rounds in the AGB tables and Frostbite.  The use of option Strict further restricts rounds to only those listed in AGB tables 1-8. There are a few other minor changes, but the major change is an update to Microsoft .Net version 4.5.  This is ahead of PCI DSS requirements that demand the disabling of the TLS1.0 security protocol by 30 June this year.  This requires Golden Records to be updated to support only TLS1.1 and TLS1.2.  This version of .Net is unfortunately not supported by Windows XP and Windows Vista, except Vista service pack 2.  Consequently, while existing installations will continue to work, this version and future versions can only be installed on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or later.  When TLS1.0 is disabled on our server on 30 June, existing versions will continue to work, but will be unable to connect to any web services.  Update notifications will cease, and cloud services will be disabled. All users are urged to update to this version as soon as possible.  We regret the inconvenience, but PCI DSS compliance is a requisite of being able to sell online.  In addition TLS1.0 is now regarded as a weak security protocol.  We have already disabled SSL. https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dotnet/p/dotnet45xp/ Please contact us if you need further information.

GDPR

New Data Protection Regulations come into force on the 25 May 2018.  Known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), they significantly increase data protection obligations and the rights of individuals.  Our privacy policies have been updated to comply with the GDPR and can be viewed here and here.  They explain how we lawfully use personal data we hold and explain the rights of our customers and users. Regarding data security, all databases are encrypted, including the local database used by Golden Records.  Backups are encrypted, as are the data files used by Golden Arrow.  Connections to the cloud server are also encrypted.  Website connections are now SSL only, and weak protocols are disabled. GDPR also places on data controllers an obligation to not keep data when it is no longer needed and to obtain explicit consent to the processing of that data.  We do not share your data with anybody else.  When you send us data to investigate a problem or for help, we will destroy that data when it is no longer needed.  Cloud users will have noticed that when they log in to the cloud, they are being prompted to give explicit consent for data storage.  New users now have to give consent as part of account activation.
